Hardwood Kitchen worktops will wear down over time, the finish will begin to break down and split allowing water to seep its way into the wood fibres. They need to be cared for to be kept in their tip top condition. Many manufacturers will spray a varnish from the factory. I use oils / waxes that soak into the wood where it will protect it for years to come, this also has the benefit for you, if your worktop gets accidentally scratched you can cover it with the oil / Wax I leave with you making small repairs simple.
